Ho's, Hustlers, Call-Girls & Rent-Boys: Prostitutes Writing on Life, Love, Work, Sex and Money

Hoes, Hustlers, Call-Girls & Rent Boys is a collection of writing by people who have taken money to have sex. It¹s not academics theorizing about prostitutes, or moviemakers imagining what it might be like, or authors pretending they've been hookers. This book is writing by people who are, or were, actually in the Life. In their own words. Their own voices. Raw, uncensored, unfiltered. Not just about turning tricks. About life, love, work, money and everything and anything else. This is a historical document that entertains as it illuminates an underrepresented
segment of society that has no voice, that's shamed and glamorized, ostracized and glorified, reviled and worshipped.

Ho's, Hustlers, Call-Girls & Rent-Boys began in a basement in San Francisco at a writers workshop for people who exchanged sex for money. For two years, every Tuesday afternoon, we sat in that basement and we wrote about pets, first love, things that seemed to be a good idea at the time. Whatever. Then we went out and asked people from all over the world who worked in the sex business to give us their writing.

Prostitutes walk among us and we don't even know it. Ho's, Hustlers, Call-Girls & Rent-Boys strips away the glitter and stiletto heels, the myths, prejudices and misperceptions, and humanizes the men and women who we pay for sex.

Only qualification for writers: you've turned a trick. Be anonymous or use your real name. I'm looking for writing on any relevant subject. But here are some suggestions if you'd like them:

Single State Of The Union

Single Women Speak Out about Life, Love and the Pursuit of Happiness

Are single women happy individualists? Neurotic man-hunters? Bunny boilers with bad perms? Are we confused or content? Lonely or lively? Angry or ambitious? Or possibly none?or all?of the above? No one seems to know. In fact, it would appear we're at a cultural crossroads as social arbiters desperately try to figure out if the new single woman is a card-carrying member of the Quirky Alone movement or if she's more
comfortable mincing about in a strapless prom dress making cow eyes at The Bachelor.

Single State of the Union is a collection of personal essays that attempt to answer these questions by offering a big picture view of what it means to be a single woman today. We've all read the bad date stories, seen the sassy tales of Cosmo-swilling sirens in search of Prada bags and/or powerful men. What we've seen less of, though, are the stories that reflect the full monty of the single female experience...essays that depict her creative ability, her intellectual pursuits, her physical achievements, relationships with family, friends and pets, weird science projects and obsessive Pez collections. Is singlehood cause for celebration or serious soul-searching? Is it love or not having to do somebody's laundry (including your own) that makes the world go 'round'? In a nutshell, what's the cultural zeitgeist on the new single woman?

Single State of the Union seeks well-written essays that are revealing, rewarding, wry and that give voice to the good, bad and ugly of life as a single woman in a society that idealizes -- even fetishizes -- marriage. This particular collection is not so much looking for stories about dating or the search for love (at least in the traditional sense) but stories of life, liberty, and our individual pursuits of happiness, whether through music, misadventure, motherhood, or all of the above.
Essays from women of all ages (18-88) and all situations (single, dating,
"living in sin," recently married, divorced, widowed, etc) are welcome --
as long as they are on point.

PLEASE NOTE: At this time, the editors are primarily interested in essays dealing with the following topics:

- Filthy Lucre: Single women and money.
- For the Love of Art: Life as a musician/writer/painter/performance artist
- On Our Own: Secret single behavior, issues of loneliness, home repair horrors, etc.
- Obsessions: Single women and their addictions to clothes/fashion, TV shows, alcohol, etc.
- I Married Adventure: Road trips, mountain-climbing, adventures at sea. Danger, intrigue, enlightenment, romance and laughter on the road.
- Best Friends Forever: Single women and their friendships (with men and other women).
- The Egg and I: Pregnancy, hormonal frenzies, the search for Mr. Right Sperm Donor.
- Army of One: Battles with cancer, professional skirmishes, military service, physical accomplishments, mother-daughter duels, tales of revenge, etc.

EDITOR: Diane Mapes has written essays on pop culture, the single life, television, travel, naked sushi, and more for Bust, Christian Science Monitor, Health, Los Angeles Times, Mental Floss,, Seattle Magazine, Seattle Times, Washington Post, and the recent anthology Single Woman of a Certain Age. A native of the Pacific Northwest, she studied journalism at Western Washington University and creative writing at the University of Washington where she won two awards for her fiction. Her
popular reported essays about dating for the Seattle Times were the springboard for her first book, a humorous look at today's courtship practices, How to Date in a Post-Dating World (Sasquatch Books, 2006). She currently lives in Seattle and is happily single.

LENGTH: 1,000-3,000 words

FORMAT: Essays must be typed, double-spaced, and paginated. Please include your address, phone number, email address, and a short bio on the last page. Essays will not be returned.

Juno Books

Juno Books, making it's debut in October 2006, is a new imprint of Prime Books and Wildside Press. Juno Books will be distributed by Diamond Distributors.

Juno publishes fantasy featuring strong female characters in richly-imagined contexts with romantic or erotic elements. Otherworldly romance, an adventurous quest, dark secrets, light
humor, deep desires, high imagination, mystery, metaphysics, magic, myth...swept into the past, set in the future, or happening right now. Stories that go beyond the ordinary and take the reader with them.

Juno is currently looking for novels from 60,000 to 100,000 words in length. Although our books might be called "paranormal romance", don't let either word frighten you off. "Paranormal" means "beyond the ordinary" and "romance" means "an exciting and/or mysterious quality as of a heroic time or adventure" as well as "a story dealing with love".

We are looking for adventures for women (and don't mind if they appeal to men, too). Books that are exciting, romantic, fulfilling, and fun...suspenseful, stimulating, sensual, and dark...fantastic, astonishing, wondrous, and wild...mythic, magical, meaningful, and
passionate...imaginative, speculative, erotic and extraordinary...any mixture of elements you may imagine. We want stories with strong female characters or women who grow and become empowered -- women discovering themselves and discovering new worlds. Fascinating characters interacting in plausible well-built worlds. Romance, eroticism, and sex must be inherent to the story.

We are open to fantasy, science/futuristic/speculative fiction, otherworldly or supernatural beings, modern characters in the past, alternate history, love that lasts across time, magical or psychic abilities, occult detectives, historical supernatural horror, and cross mixes; traditional or non-traditional ethnicity or sexual orientation, as well as the more traditional.

We don't want pornography, category romance, or Christian romance. Humor is great, but not slapstick comedy or airhead antics.

Original novels preferred but previously published, and out-of-print work will be considered. Please note the length we are looking for; this might be a good opportunity to develop a novella into a novel or reshape a concept into a series.

Submission details are found here.

"Plot is a Four-Letter Word"

Plot is a Four-Letter Word -- not just a pun-y title for erotica authors, but an often over-looked part of writing. Give it a read and see if it can help you make and sell better stories.

Written by Wendy Webb, this article was published in an older issue of Gila Queen's newsletter.

Promoting Your Site or Author Blog

In checking my blog stats today, I found a referal from a site I had not seen before and, curious, I decided to check it out. Seems I am listed in this site, an adult directory, without having done anything, so I imagine I was spidered along with blogger. This is not exciting or noteworthy in and of itself, however...

This site is now in beta and as such, allows free ads. They declare that you will be notified prior to leaving beta or such time as the ads must be paid for. For more information, read the JoyScape site information. As always, I share the information & let you decide if it suits your needs.

This brings me to other promotional links I have been meaning to post here...

(Or, you can find a columnist, befriend them, and wait for them to like you and your site enough to think it's cool & list the link themselves!) Note: this site uses javascripts for links, so your hits may not show they came from the site, but you should note an increase in traffic.

B) Text Link Ads. These are the 'grey boxes' on the left of site pages, which are also published with the site's newsletters. I just tried these, and have seen quite a few hits from there. (These links do typically show up in refers.) Samhain is a royalty paying ebook company that offers 40% of the cover price (as set by Samhain Publishing, Ltd) for a single-author ebook.

The author is not required to pay any fees for editing or for publishing in either digital or print. We are NOT a vanity publisher.

Our contract requests full rights to the work, including both digital and print, is fully negotiable and available for review upon acceptance of your story.

How to Submit

All submissions must be sent by email as we are primarily an epublisher, and all our work is done through the internet.

Please send a query letter telling us a bit about you along with a 2 to 5 page synopsis and sample chapters - attached, not within the body of the email as it makes reading difficult! You may, at your discretion, send the whole manuscript as it will be requested if it passes the first review. Plus, as a reader, nothing drives me insane like having to wait to finish a book!

Formatting and submission details are here.
